Vatican City - The former Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Agostino Casaroli, who masterminded the Holy See's rapprochement with communist states in Eastern Europe, has died at the age of 83.

Cardinal Casaroli, who served under four popes, did arguably more than any single Vatican official to keep the spirit of Catholicism alive in Eastern Europe during the harsh years of communism.
