European carbon dioxide prices hit record highs today, extending the previous day's sharp gains as bullish sentiment in oil and continental power markets triggered buying of carbon quotas.

Carbon dioxide quotas for delivery in December 2008 gained €1.5 to a record €33.70 a tonne before easing to €33.20 euros.

A London-based trader said German utilities were among the main buyers.
