The European Union's executive commission will today announce aid of around €600 million for Afghanistan over the next four years.

The funding for governance reform, health and rural development would be on top of that to be provided by member states, commission spokeswoman Emma Udwin said.

In the 2002-2006 period, the commission provided €1 billion to Afghanistan on top of €3.7 billion provided by member states.

The United States has announced the administration will ask Congress for $8.6 billion in new money to train and equip the Afghan army and police, and $2 billion for reconstruction projects.

US officials said they wanted allies to follow suit.
