BRUSSELS - The European Commission yesterday launched a major investigations into transatlantic airline traffic, in an attempt to prevent big carriers from dominating the lucrative market through alliances.

The inquiry was triggered by last month's announcement of a tie up between the two dominant players, British Airways and American Airlines, but will also cover five other alliances between European and US carriers which had previously been approved by the Commission's competition authorities.
