Almeira - A couple near this southern Spanish town have been arrested by police for financing the construction of a brothel with EU subsidies, police said yesterday.

The €54,000 regional development subsidy was originally earmarked for construction of a horse riding school. The local authority gave its approval only to find out later that the owners, a 44-year-old woman and her 50-year-old husband, had built a brothel instead.
