Madrid - The Spanish government came under pressure yesterday to respond positively to a ceasefire by Basque ETA guerrillas with a newspaper reporting the separatists would honour their truce for at least six months.

El Mundo said that, despite official scepticism, ETA's leadership planned to keep the ceasefire intact while seeking a political solution to the 30-year conflict. The paper quoted a source with close links to ETA as saying: "The peace process may have its ups and downs, but it is irreversible."
