Galway Corporation has pledged to take legal action against a group of environmental activists if they carry out a threat to occupy the site of the city's proposed £27 million sewage treatment plant at Mutton Island.

Following suggestions that a significant number of eco-warriors intend to occupy the controversial site, a corporation spokeswoman said the local authority would take the necessary legal steps to remove them.

"It would be a major, unwanted headache for the corporation and, indeed, for the people of Galway," said the Assistant City Manager, Ms Martina Maloney. "If these activists can get on the island, then they can be got off the island."
