Enterprise Ireland (EI) will open a new office in Mexico City today.

It is the second base in Latin America after EI established a presence in São Paulo, Brazil, last year.

Mexico is the 11th largest economy in the world and the second biggest in Latin America after Brazil. Irish exports to Mexico grew by 6 per cent in 2006 to €62.6 million.

Enterprise Minister Micheál Martin plans to lead a major trade mission to Mexico and Brazil this year.

"With a population of over 106 million, and a well-educated middle-class with strong purchasing power, Mexico presents a vast market opportunity for Irish firms," the Minister said.

"Increasing exports in both existing and emerging markets is crucial in sustaining economic growth and wealth creation in Ireland."
