Endangered bison calves born at Fota

Fota Wildlife Park in Cork has announced the births of two endangered bison calves named Jan and Ganya.

The calves, born earlier this month, bring the number of European bison in the herd at Fota to 11.

Speaking today, Fota director Dr Neil Stronach said the births were remarkable considering the bison faced near extinction less than 100 years ago.

"Both calves have made outstanding progress since their arrival. The bison herd is now a very impressive sight on the open grasslands at the top of the park," he said.

At full maturity, the animal can grow to approximately 1.9 metres tall and weigh approximately three-quarters of a tonne.

The bison join three baby giraffe, ringtail lemur babies, ducklings, and goslings at the park.
