A woman in her 70s died and two elderly people remained in hospital last night after a fire in their home in Co Wicklow.

The fire broke out shortly before 1.30am yesterday at a house on Waverley Terrace in Bray. It was believed to have started on the second floor of the property.

The fire services were called to the scene and a man and a woman, both in their 80s, managed to escape the blaze.

They were taken to St Columcille’s Hospital, Loughlinstown, Co Dublin, where they were described as comfortable last night.

A woman in her 70s who was upstairs in the house died in the blaze.

A technical examination of the house was carried out yesterday and although the results have not yet been released, a Garda spokesman said last night they were not treating the fire as suspicious.
