Eight people were rescued this afternoon by a lifeboat on Lough Derg this afternoon.

The eight were aboard a 42ft cruiser which ran aground on rocks at Goat Road, on the north-eastern shore of the lough.

The Lough Derg RNLI lifeboat was launched and it located the vessel shortly after 5pm.

The vessel was taken off the rocks and towed to deep water where a full check of steering and engine was carried out which revealed that the cruiser was still seaworthy.
