A roadside bomb exploded near a vehicle carrying policemen in southern Afghanistan today, killing eight.

The attack happened on the outskirts of the city of Kandahar. The provincial police chief Esmatullah Alizai blamed the Taliban but provided no further details.

Kandahar was once the stronghold of Afghanistan's former Taliban regime which was ousted following the September 11 attacks in the United States.

Since then, Taliban have been attacking Afghan security forces and police to force them to abandon their support for president Hamid Karzai's government.
