Eight people have been killed and 45 injured in southwestern France after a Spanish bus and about 20 cars crashed in a multiple motorway accident.

Fifteen of the injured were in a serious condition, said Alain Gehin, prefect of the Gironde department, after visiting the crash site near Salles, south of Bordeaux.

Local traffic authorities had at first reported at least 13 dead and 20 injured in the crash early on Sunday.

Six of the eight dead were aboard the Spanish bus, Gehin said.

Some 200 firemen and 60 police were mobilised for the rescue effort at the crash site on the A 63 highway.
