Gross expenditure on education has increased by one-third since 1992. The 1996 allocation of £2.196 billion breaks down into £708.5 million on first-level education; £858.9 million on second level and £521.2 million on third level. The office of the Minister for Education accounts for the remaining £104.7 million.
