Earthquake of 5.9 shakes buildings in Tokyo

A moderate earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5

A moderate earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.9 jolted the Tohoku region of northern Japan today and shook buildings in Tokyo.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage, and no tsunami warning was issued, public broadcaster NHK said.

The focus of the quake was 19 miles below the seabed off the Pacific coast.
