A magnitude 6.7 quake hit off Papua New Guinea's island of New Ireland, the US Geological Survey reported today.

A magnitude 6.7 quake hit off Papua New Guinea's island of New Ireland, the US Geological Survey reported today.

A national disaster centre official based in Papua New Guinea's capital, Port Moresby, said by telephone there were no immediate reports of damage.

There were also no immediate warnings of a tsunami from the quake, the epicentre of which was 95km south southeast of Taron, New Ireland, and at a depth of 35km.

The quake struck at 3:pm, the USGS said. It had initially reported the quake's magnitude as 7.0.
