London - Hospital engineers were yesterday waiting to examine a lift after a dying pensioner became trapped while his relatives waited in the building.

The 71-year-old man, who had suffered a stroke and was on a life support machine, was being transported from a brain screening to the casualty unit when the lift stopped at St Peter's Hospital in Surrey. Staff were forced to pass oxygen and battery packs to staff inside the lift. He died later in a hospital suite.
