Moscow - Russia's lower house of parliament approved two liberal deputy speakers yesterday in a move hailed by them as a defeat for the Communists and a sign of new cooperation between pro-reform parties.

The State Duma voted 242 to 132 for Mr Boris Nemtsov of the Union of Right-Wing Forces (SPS) and 240 to 98 for Mr Vladimir Lukin of the Yabloko party.
