An 18-year-old Dublin man has been remanded in custody charged with assault in relation to an incident that has left a Galway man in a critical condition.

Shane Byrne, of no fixed abode and who is originally from Dublin, appeared before a special sitting of Galway District Court yesterday morning.

Mr Byrne was charged with causing harm to Shane Grogan in Tuam in the early hours of Sunday.

Mr Grogan (22), who is from Shop Street, Tuam, remains in a serious condition at Beaumont Hospital in Dublin. He had been transferred there from Galway University Hospital where he was found to have serious head injuries requiring specialist treatment at Beaumont.

Mr Byrne, who has been living in Tuam for a number of months, was granted free legal aid by Judge Gerard Furlong.

He was remanded in custody to appear before Harristown District Court on Friday morning.
