Gardaí from Cork and Limerick have arrested three men for questioning after making the biggest seizure of drugs in Munster this year when they recovered €1.5 million worth of cannabis in a series of searches in Cork city.
Cork City and Limerick City divisional drugs squad officers mounted a joint operation in which detectives stopped a car on the Boreenamanna Road in Cork city at around 1pm and recovered a quantity of cannabis resin.
Detectives carried out a follow-up operation in the area and searched a house where they found another quantity of cannabis resin. Gardaí put the total value of the haul at €1.5 million making it the biggest drugs seizure in Munster this year.
Three men - two from Cork and one from Limerick - have been arrested under Section 2 of the Drugs Trafficking Act. The legislation allows for detention for up to seven days and two of the men are being held at the Bridewell Garda Station and one being held in Togher.
Gardaí believe that with the seizure of the drugs and the arrest of the three men - two of whom are in their 50s and one of whom is in his 40s - they have broken up a major drug supply operation run by Cork and Limerick crime gangs.
