London - British customs seized a record quantity of drugs in 1997, a haul that included large amounts of heroin and was valued overall at some £656 million. The greatest increase was in heroin. A total of 1,747 kg was seized in 1997, a tonne more than in 1996.

Experts estimate that seizures by customs represent only 15 per cent of the total import of illegal drugs.
