Five family doctors in Ballyhaunis, Co Mayo, have objected on health grounds to the siting of a £30 million cement manufacturing plant at Tooreen, five miles away.

According to the Tooreen Cement Action Group, which is opposing the proposal by Frank Harrington Ltd, local medical opinion is overwhelmingly against siting the plant in a well populated rural area.

The Harrington company has denied any health risks in its environmental impact statement to Mayo County Council, and is not commenting on the latest development.
