Divers recover man's body from Mayo river

The body of a 24-year-old man who drowned in Co Mayo early this morning has been recovered.

The body of a 24-year-old man who drowned in Co Mayo early this morning has been recovered.

The victim and a friend were seen going into the River Moy at The Quay on Ballina at 3.50am.

A passer-by called the emergency services and one of the men was rescued.

Local gardai joined Malin Head Coastguard and divers from the nearby Grainne Uaile diving club to search the river until the dead man was found at 6.50am.

His body has been removed to Castlebar Hospital for a post mortem examination.
