TEACHING staff in the RTCs and the Dublin Institute of Technology are to ballot on industrial action over the level of part time staff employed by the colleges, writes Paul Cullen, Education Correspondent.

The executive of the Teachers' Union of Ireland is proposing a series of one day strikes in the sector if no progress is made in talks with the Department of Education on increasing the proportion of fall time staff in the colleges.

The union says it has succeeded in lifting the ceiling on full time appointments in vocational, community and comprehensive schools, and now wants to achieve the same result at third level.

No progress has been reported in the dispute involving IMPACT members in the RTCs.

An overtime ban by 200 clerical, administrative and library staff began last week, and the union plans to escalate the dispute with a ban on the use of telephones next week.
