Minsk - The government of Belarus backed down yesterday in a row with ambassadors it wanted to evict on grounds that renovation work needed to be done on their residences in Minsk.

As a deadline expired for the 20-odd ambassadors to leave, the government said no new one would be set and the dispute would be settled on a case-by-case basis, diplomats said. This was confirmed by the foreign ministry.
