The Department of Foreign Affairs is today to request the Irish consul in Nicosia to look into the conviction of the 22year-old Dublin woman who last week made a false complaint to Cypriot police that she was raped.

The Department is seeking to clarify a number of issues relating to the four-month conviction Ms Annette Mangan, from Tallaght, among them whether she had time to brief her lawyer before the trial, and whether her sentence was unusual for the offence.

Mangan was due to fly home yesterday after a two-week package holiday. Her sister, who was also on holiday, has moved into an apartment close to Nicosia Central Prison, where she visited Mangan over the weekend.
