A total of 744 people applied to join the Defence Forces following its 2000 general recruitment campaign. Some 187 have been enlisted so far from the 1999 campaign and this year's recruitment drive. The Minister for Defence, Mr Smith, informed Mr Ivan Yates (FG, Wexford) that the Defence Forces intend to recruit 750 general service recruits this year.
