Ankara - A leading Turkish prosecutor yesterday said he sought the death sentence for a university student on charges of membership of an armed left-wing group.

"The death penalty is demanded in our indictment because he is a member of an armed illegal organisation and stole a policeman's gun during a protest," the Ankara state security court chief prosecutor, Mr Nuh Mete Yuksel, said. Physics student Mr Ibrahim Gullu was charged two weeks ago with "attempting to alter the constitutional order by using force".
