The Fianna Fáil leader, Micheál Martin, expressed his deep sympathy on the death of David Charlton, husband of former tánaiste Mary Coughlan.

He was a garda attached to Glenties station. The couple met when he was on duty at Leinster House and they married two years later when Ms Coughlan, now 47, was 26 years old.

She often paid tribute to how he gave her great support at home, particularly during her busy time as minister.

Mr Charlton, who was 48, lost a leg in a road accident several years ago when his car hit black ice.

He nearly died but made a remarkable recovery. He remained in his job and continued to be a keen golfer.

Mr Martin said: “It was with great sadness that I learned of the death of David last night. David was the beloved husband of former Fianna Fáil TD and tánaiste Mary Coughlan, who has been a friend and colleague for many years.”

He will repose at home until tomorrow, when there will be a funeral Mass at noon in St Mary’s Church, Frosses, Co Donegal, with burial afterwards in the local Cranny Road cemetery.

Ms Coughlan and her children Meabh (15) and Cathal (13) were being comforted by relatives and friends following the death of Mr Charlton from cancer.
