The Dáil passed the controversial Criminal Justice Bill after a vote was taken in the chamber last night.

The Bill will go to the Seanad today and is due to pass all stages by Friday evening. The bill was passed 62 to 11 after the main opposition parties abstained from the vote. Sinn Féin, the Green Party

and a number of Independents voted against the legislation.

Tánaiste and Minister for Justice Michael McDowell had agreed to opposition demands for more time to debate the Bill in the Dáil after the Easter recess.

Mr McDowell agreed in the course of Dáil exchanges to hold the debate on the report and final stages of the legislation yesterday before a vote was held.
