Nicosia - Cyprus has drawn up contingency plans in case the UN peacekeepers on the divided island pull out, according to its Defence Minister, Mr Socrates Hasikos .

The UN force's mandate expires today and Cyprus has warned it may not agree to a renewal unless the UN changes contentious wording in an addendum to a report now with the Security Council. Greek-Cypriots have taken exception to the addendum which they see as suggesting that the future presence of UNFICYP is subject to the approval of the Turkish Cypriots.
