Sydney - Australia's tropical resort town of Cairns emerged battered after yesterday direct hit by a cyclone and floodwaters were rising in the state of Queensland.

Up to 40,000 homes in the Great Barrier Reef resort town were without electricity after Cyclone Steve ripped down power lines, uprooted trees and unroofed buildings last night.
