CORK’S KINO cinema, the country’s only independent arthouse cinema outside of Dublin, looks set to close this weekend despite efforts by both its owner and a campaign group to keep it open.

Owner Mick Hannigan has confirmed the cinema is scheduled to close on Sunday night after incurring €60,000 in debts during a planned expansion and upgrade which never came to fruition.

Asked whether the cinema would be closing temporarily or permanently, Mr Hannigan said he did not know at this stage but that without some sort of assistance from either Cork City Council or some State agency, the closure would be permanent.
