CAIRO -Egypt's interior ministry has announced the lifting of a two year curfew on the troubled town of Mallawi, centre of activity for the radical Islamist group Al Gama'a Al-Islamiyya since early 1994, writes Siona Jenkins.

Government and security officials have been claiming the upper hand in their battle against the Gama'a for some months and the removal of the curfew is seen as a sign of rising government confidence.
