Police were attacked by late night revellers in Derry as they went to the aid of an unconscious girl, it was revealed today.

The PSNI warned that such actions could have potentially serious consequences.

Local Inspector Mark Boyse said: "Whilst members of the emergency services were the targets, the real victims were the community they were trying to respond to and innocent passers-by."

Police officers and ambulance crew were pelted with bottles after they were called to assist a collapsed girl in Derry's Waterloo Place around 2 a.m.

A large crowd gathered and poured drink over the unconscious girl and the officers as they attempted to administer first aid.

Inspector Boyse appealed to anyone in the community with influence to help end these type of attacks.
