A proposal to demolish one of the Dublin houses where James Joyce lived and replace it with an apartment block has underlined the urgent need for legislation to give statutory protection to listed buildings, according to Mr Eric Byrne TD.

The house, in Drumcondra, was one of several in which the Joyce family lived.
