Woman in her 70s dies in Oughterard house fire

Gardaí alerted to blaze at Camp Street in town at lunchtime on Wednesday

A woman in her 70s has died after a house fire in Co Galway.  Gardaí said they were alerted to the blaze at Camp Street in Oughterard at 12.30pm on Wednesday.

A woman in her 70s has died after a house fire in Oughterard, Co Galway.

The alarm was raised when a neighbour on Camp Street noticed smoke billowing from the two-storey terraced house.

Neighbours attempted to contact the woman but were unable to get into the house as the fire had spread quickly.

Initial examinations by the emergency services suggested the fire started accidently. It is understood the woman’s dog also died in the fire.

He body was removed to University Hospital Galway for a post mortem.
