Irish building materials firm CRH said today it had bought four US companies for $350 million (€251 million) to add to its US materials division.

The acquisitions include Conrad Yelvington Distributors, the largest rail distributor of aggregates in the south-east United States.

CRH has also bought two producers of aggregates, asphalt, and readymixed concrete - Oregon-based Eugene Sand & Gravel and Cessford Construction which operates in Iowa and Illinois - and McMinn's Asphalt and Prospect Aggregates in Pennsylvania.

The construction industry supplier said last month it expected to continue a steady flow of acquisitions and that it would look at buying Anglo American's Tarmac business.
