Kuwait City - An appeals court yesterday upheld the death sentence on a former colonel who headed a puppet government after Iraq's 1990 invasion of Kuwait, in the second-to-last legal step before Alaa Hussein Ali heads to the gallows.

"This is unfair, your honour," Ali shouted from the cage in which he was being held as Judge Ahmad al-Ajeel announced the verdict in a one-minute hearing.
