Ankara - The largest party in the Turkish parliament, the pro-Islamist Welfare Party, was shut down yesterday by a judgment from the country's highest court. This said Welfare had violated its constitutional obligations to respect Turkey's strict secular principles. The court seized the party's assets and banned its leaders from politics for five years.
