A husband and wife were rescued by the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) in Strangford Lough, Co Down, last night.

The couple were canoing off the coast of Home Bay, near Killyleagh, when their canoe overturned.

They managed to swim to a racing bouy where they waited for a considerable length of time before being spotted by a passerby who was walking along the shore.

The RNLI Portaferry Lifeboat crew reached the couple at around 7.50pm and they were brought to shore at Killlyleagh Yacht Club. The couple, suffering the effects of hypothermia, were taken to hospital for treatment.
