Armed robbers brutally attacked and tied up a couple during an overnight attack in their south Belfast home.

The man (63) was confronted by two men with handguns as he returned to the Malone Road property.  They forced their way in, beating the victim and demanding cash, police said.

"Both the man and his wife were then forced to lie face down on their bed and the demands for money continued," a PSNI spokeswoman added.

The raiders tied the couple up before stealing cash and escaping in a silver Audi 80 car.

The man suffered serious head and arm injuries, although they are not thought to be life-threatening.  His wife was not hurt.
