Counting began today in the general election in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Millions of Congolese voted yesterday, hoping to end years of war, corruption and chaos that have brought the mineral-rich African giant and former Belgian colony to its knees.
UN officials and foreign observers said turnout was high, and voting was mostly orderly and peaceful at the landmark polls.
It is hoped the polls will help the country move on from the five-year war that ending in 2003 after embroiling six neighbouring states and killed four million people.
