A grandson of Independent Dublin city councillor and former Sinn Féin member Christy Burke appeared before the Special Criminal Court yesterday charged with IRA membership and firearms offences.

Ciaran Burke (20), Ferrycarrig Park, Coolock, Dublin 17, is charged with membership of an unlawful organisation, namely the Irish Republican Army, on July 2nd, 2012. He is also charged with unlawful possession of a 9mm Glock semi-automatic pistol and 13 rounds of ammunition at the N32, Coolock, Dublin 13 on the same date.

There was no application for bail, but a lawyer for Mr Burke indicated that the issue could be resolved on Friday. Presiding judge Mr Justice Paul Butler, sitting with Judge Alison Lindsay and Judge William Hamill, granted an application for legal aid and remanded Mr Burke in custody to appear before the non-jury court tomorrow.
