PLANS HAVE been submitted to Killarney Town Council for a large “Gaelic Culture Museum” at the GAA’s Fitzgerald Stadium in the town.
The plans are for the entrance end of the site, just off the N22. Moreover, the demolition of existing toilets and northern and eastern boundary walls will need to go ahead to allow for the project.
The application by Kerry Gaelic Culture Museum Ltd is for a two-storey building with a ground floor area of almost 1,500sq m. The glass-fronted building is to host a coffee shop, merchandising and gift shop and auditorium as well as a museum display area.
Earlier this year intense rivalry developed between Killarney and Tralee, each vying for the museum.
The county board came down on the side of Killarney with the tourist town’s 1.5 million visitors each year weighing heavily in its favour.
There is likely to be a planning decision in February said a spokeswoman for the planning department at the town council.
