ADELAIDE - An Australian town council has resigned en masse after its mayor wrote a letter describing children of inter-racial marriages as "mongrels", further fanning a national debate on racism.

Nine out of the 10 members of the council in Port Lincoln, 700kms east of Adelaide, quit on Monday night after the mayor refused to resign.

"We decided enough is enough and when he would not resign or retract, the only thing we thought we could do as honourable people was to resign," said Councillor Rod Cocks.
