The cost of a standard stamp is to rise to 55 cents after the communications regulator Comreg today approved a price increase sought by An Post.

The company requested the price rise in December and will see the cost of posting a standard letter rise seven cents.

However, the cost of posting a large letter of between 50 to 100gs will fall by 5 cents to 55 cents.

As part of its application An Post said it had absorbed significant costs, including an 18.9 per cent rise in wages under the national pay agreements. The last time stamp prices increased was in 2003.

Corporate customers using franking machines will get a discount of 1 cent and pay 54 cents per letter.

An Post said the increase was behind inflation.
