A postmortem is due to be carried out today on the body of a teenage hurler who dropped dead during a match in Co Cork.

The 17-year-old from the Ballinora GAA Club collapsed and died last night ten minutes into the second half of a game against rivals Kilmichael as his parents looked on. His brother was also playing on the team.

John Brosnan, chairman of Ballinora GAA Club, said the county had lost a talented and eager member.

"Not only have we lost a player here but unfortunately a man in the future who could have been, who showed signs that he could be interested in administration because he also was involved in helping out . . . he was beginning to get involved in the coaching of younger players," he said.

Two doctors who were at the match in the village of Waterfall attempted to revive the teenager, but their efforts were unsuccessful, and he was pronounced dead on arrival at Cork University Hospital.

A postmortem will be carried out there later today by assistant state pathologist Dr Margaret Bolster, and the local coroner has been informed.

The teenager was a keen hurler with the Ballinora club and had been playing in the Mid-Cork minor league. It is understood he had just completed his Leaving Certificate examinations last week.
