A 35-year-old man was yesterday returned for trial on charges of defrauding a Co Cork businessman of more than €80,000 over a five-month period.

Maurice Caplice, from Marshallstown, Mitchelstown, appeared at Fermoy District Court charged with 48 offences under the Criminal Justice Theft and Fraud Offences Act. He is accused of defrauding John Hallinan of sums ranging from €600 to €14,000 on dates between September 7th, 2010, and February 18th, 2011.

Insp Tony O’Sullivan said a book of evidence had been served on Mr Caplice, and he asked to have him returned for trial on indictment by judge and jury.

Judge Brian Sheridan granted the application, and remanding Mr Caplice on bail, returned him for trial to Cork Circuit Criminal Court on October 16th.
