More than 60 people were arrested in Cork city for drunk and disorderly behaviour during the St Patrick's Day festivities.

Fifteen people were detained overnight at the Bridewell Garda station in the city centre.

Cork North Central Fine Gael TD Bernard Allen said one publican he spoke to closed his doors to all but regular customers, such was his fear of escalating levels of public disorder.

Mr Allen said public celebrations were becoming an excuse for drunken disorder and mayhem to break out.

"Public disorder is getting to be a very serious issue. Where are the teens getting the alcohol? There are no easy answers to this.

"We will have to put more responsibility on off-licences and increase the penalties for public disorder. A lot of people have serious questions to answer.

"Last year we had incidents in Dublin [on St Patrick's Day] but we thought it was a once-off. Now it has been repeated in Dublin and here." - Olivia Kelleher
